Invoking Confidence

Nobody is born with with limitless self-confidence, it is something that you build overtime. Self-confidence is important because we not only feel better about ourselves, we are more resiliant as well. Brain scan studies have shown that when people have higher self-confidence, emotional wounds like rejection or failure will not affect them as harshly, and bounce back from them more quickly. Here are three ways you can build self-confidence

  1. Use positive affirmations correctly – Positive affirmations such as,”I’m going to be a great success” are used quite often but they have one problem — they tend to make people with low self-confidence feel even worse about themselves. Why? Because low such declarations are simply too contrary to our existing beliefs. Instead, we should make them more believable like, “I’m going to persevere until I succeed.”
  2. Learn to accept compliments – One of the trickiest aspects of improving self-esteem is that when we feel bad about ourselves we tend to be more resistant to compliments — even though that is when we most need them. So set yourself a goal to take a compliment instead of ignoring it.
  3. Identify your competencies – Self-confidence is built by demonstrating skill. If you pride yourself on being a good cook, throw more dinner parties. If you’re a good swimmer, join a team and compete. Figure out what you’re good at and find opportunities and careers that allow you to demonstrate that skill.
